ITALY, 218 BC. Having just crossed the Alps in a daring invasion of the Italian peninsula, Hannibal's army swells with barbarian recruits eager to push back against Roman influence. The Roman senate dispatches two armies with both consuls to meet the Carthaginians. Hannibal defeats Scipio and the first army at Ticinus and eagerly awaits the arrival of the second Roman force under Tiberius Sempronius Longus. The elder Scipio counsels caution to Longus, but Hannibal baits the Romans into advancing across the icy-cold Trebia River in winter to attack his position. Will Longus realize his wily opponent is laying a trap before it's too late?
