SAMNIUM, 214 BC. Hannibal is traversing across Campania, deep in Roman Italy, and Fabius is eager to avoid another major clash with Hannibal directly. He sends Gracchus with an army of slaves and prisoners to shadow Hannibal's movements. But when Gracchus reaches the town of Beneventum, he learns that nearly 20,000 Carthaginian reinforcements are en route from the southwest. It is an army of hastily raised, questionably motivated troops from the southern boot of Italy. Gracchus adopts a defensive position across the Via Appia and awaits Hanno's army. Can the Romans stop critical reinforcements from joining Hannibal in Campania?
