How Miles Built Germany

In our 1813 season finale you got to see our club maneuver armies across a large hex map of Prussia and Saxony. He based his map on the exact layout of the boardgame Campaign of Nations, transcribing that onto polystyrene insulation. Want to see a step by step photo tutorial to learn how you can make your own 3D hex maps at home? We got you covered!

1813 Campaign Guide

12/19/2023

In our Season 4 finale, 11 club members wage war in Prussia and Saxony to determine the fate of Napoleon's empire! We used the boardgame Campaign of Nations to handle the operational side of the campaign, marrying that with Volley & Bayonet to resolve large tabletop battles.

Campaign of Nations is a hex and counter game designed only for the Fall 1813 (or Leipzig) phase of the war. We wanted to use the same map area and rules to ALSO cover the Spring 1813 phase. Doing so required a few modifications and a new set of unit counters. Well guess what? We're giving it all away for free!

The PDF GUide

In our 1813 campaign guide, you get our board game modifications, new unit counters, and the complete orders of battle for the Spring AND Fall of 1813. The OOBs are at the division level, but very easy to adapt to any game system you may prefer. The PDF also includes fog of war flags you can use as a fun optional game element. Everything you need is included in the PDF! Well, everything except a copy of the board game itself from Hollandspiele! It's a fun, lite hex and counter game that we really enjoyed playing. Even if you don't get a copy of the board game, you can still use our PDF guide for the army research and OOBs to run your own tabletop 1813 battles.

Merry Christmas, friends! Thanks for watching the channel and hanging out with us.

If you watched our insane 3mm Peleliu wargame, then you saw one of the most fantastic custom boards our club has ever produced. And that project came courtesy of Miles! In today's bonus "Free Stuff" video, he shows you exactly how to make a Pacific island of your very own. You can use these terrain techniques for all sorts of wargaming projects, so check it out!

Free Thermopylae Scenario

9/20/2023

Did you enjoy watching our club challenge Mark's Game Room for the twin battles of Thermopylae and Artemisium? Would you like to challenge your friends at home to one of these tabletop battles?

It's a long-standing Little Wars TV tradition to share our scenarios with you whenever possible, and today we're proud to share the Battle of Thermopylae! You can now download the free 2-page PDF scenario designed for Men of Bronze from Osprey Wargames. We do highly recommend you take a look at our revised QRS for the game, which includes a lot of rule tweaks and updates. That is also available for free here on this page! And if you want to use your own hoplite-era rules, the scenario should be adaptable.

We again want to thank Mark and his club for designing the scenario. We've reformatted it and illustrated the PDF with a lovely new tabletop map, but all the design work and playtesting was done by Mark's Game Room.

Men of Bronze Revised QRS

9/19/2023

In our "club vs. club" Battle of Thermopylae wargame episode you saw us refight the land and naval battle simultaneously. For the land engagement we tried Men of Bronze by Osprey Wargames. This is a game with a lot of potential and some great concepts for hoplite-era battles.

But it's also a game in desperate need of more playtesting, that can't seem to decide if it's a skirmish game or a bigger battle system. Some of the mechanics, like the Support rules, are unworkable on the tabletop. Despite the issues, we really wanted to like Men of Bronze. And so we did what any group of gamers would do--we house-ruled the Hell out of this thing! And I'm pleased to report that our revised version of the game is actually quite fun! Our new QRS with the revisions is available 100% free, here!

You could almost play the entire game from our new QRS, but you'll still probably want a copy of the original rules from Osprey. The author of the game, Eric Farrington, addressed many of the most glaring holes in Men of Bronze with his follow-up game, Wars of the Republic. But if you want a quick, easy hoplite-era wargame, our revised version of the original is a good place to start!

Happy July 4th! If you enjoyed our Vicksburg "what if" operational game, you'll probably also enjoy the full length debrief discussion. Join Keith, Mark, and Miles for an in-depth chat about the game and what they could have done differently. Do Miles and Mark think they could have managed to win WITHOUT Longstreet's troops? Why didn't Keith go for Jackson? All those questions will be answered right here on the Free Stuff page. Thanks for stopping by the LWTV website to visit us.

Proposals to Grow HMGS Shows

4/29/2023

Our club has been a very active participant in HMGS conventions for decades, running games for the shows. HMGS has 3 flagship events per year -- Cold Wars, Historicon, and Fall In. You've probably seen our video recaps of the shows since we started filming Little Wars TV.

Show attendance has been declining for years. That's not just anecdotal observation--you can refer to attendance records in the attached paper.  So what can be done about it?

Operation Compass Scenario

4/18/2023

If you've watched our latest wargame on Little Wars TV, you saw TWO scenarios unfold simultaneously. Operation Compass spanned a period of two months, across hundreds of miles of desert. Ed developed two scenarios to represent the climax of the operation at the Derna Airfield and Fort Mechili. These engagements were separated by about 50 miles of desert, leaving no option for mutual support.
Picture
Today on the Free Stuff page, Ed is pleased offer you all the details required for both scenarios, which you can play independently of each other. Each engagement includes 4 PDF files with briefings and OOBs for the opposing sides. The OOBs are structured for Fistful of TOWS 3, a game we've previously reviewed on the channel four years ago. With some tweaking, you could certainly port Ed's orders of battle to a different rule set of your preference!

Alamo Ruleser & Scenario

3/20/2023

If you watched our 8-player Alamo wargame, then you saw us playing an updated version of the original 1980s game "The Alamo Ruleser" by Rich Hasenauer and Ron Prillaman. The entire rule set fits on a ruler!

The original 18" single-sided ruler has been updated and revised into a double sided 10" version you can print and fold at home. David Good developed the new version and kindly offered to make it available for you to try!

And in addition to the free game, we're also posting the complete scenario. It includes the exact order of battle and scenario rules we used in the YouTube video, including a full layout of the Alamo complex. Once again, we want to give a special "THANK YOU" to Rich, Ron, and David for making this freely available to wargamers around the world! The 3 page PDF can be downloaded below:

March 31, 2023 UPDATE: A new version of the Alamo Ruleser (linked above) has updated some typos and offered a clearer explanation for recycling Mexican reserves.
