Play the Kharkov Scenario

11/20/2018

Did you watch our winter Kharkov wargame on YouTube to see if the 2nd SS Panzergrenadier Division Das Reich could punch through the Soviet defense north of the Orel River? Do you think you could assume command of exhausted Russian conscripts to delay the SS Panzer Corps and disrupt Manstein's timetable?

This free PDF scenario allows you to play the scenario seen in Episode 109, using Fistful of TOWs 3.

Nice work on the videos. Well done.

Regarding your Kharkhov scenario OOBs - for the Soviets does each Rifle Battalion within the Rifle Regiment consist of the stated stands (from memory 7 rifles, 3 MMGs, 2 AT Guns...etc) or are the stands a composite of all three battalions? In the former case the Regiment appears to be at 80% or so strength, the latter about 25-30%. I presume the latter.

Keep the videos coming. thanks for your efforts

Cheers
Andrew

I'm thinking with the amount of bases on the table plus the ambush units in the gulleys it is per Battalion, therefore 7 rifles, 3MMG's and 2 ATR's per Battalion

Richard is correct--EACH battalion has 12 bases, and there are 3 battalions in each rifle regiment. .

Interesting scenario. Look forward to trying it, perhaps playing each half separately. One thing that seems odd though is the lack of artillery. Is that historical, or was it done to make the game easier/go faster?

Dave--Your first question about the artillery was more of a scenario-design decision. The Germans are outpacing their guns in this quick dash for the Orel, and the Soviets were in such a state of muddled disarray on the first day of the counter-attack that limiting the artillery to on table mortars felt appropriate.

You're right about the road on the Western Table--the Germans historically attacked from the northwest against Otrada, so it should at least be slanted more in the middle of the table. The river on the northern table would have been more a minor tributary, so we chose to model it through a combination of ravines and the special rule for frozen "bog" area that the Soviets could use to surprise the Germans with a snow covered hazard.

A couple of other questions WRT the maps... The maps do not indicate which way is north. It appears from watching the video, at approx. the 8:00 mark, that for the Western Table, the top of the map (in the pdf) is south? If so, it appears the road is slanted the wrong way - should go more from the middle of the north edge towards the SE corner?

For the Northern Table, it appears the top of the map (in the pdf) is west? And thus the Germans are attacking west? Also, from the video, it appears there should be a river on the table. Was it omitted due to being frozen?

Thanks...

Great battle report and back ground on the battle. I've played the Winter Storm campaign from TFL's using the Chain of Command rules. This ties in what I played in that campaign. In the video Greg was talking about playing the SS in wargaming, and was edited to come to LWTV for full interview...can't find it. Where can I find the rest of the interview? Thanks.

It should be available now, Greg! Bonus content generally comes out the week after the main episodes.

What size bases did you use for this by the way? I like the look of the round bases (as opposed to the usual square bases), and may steal the idea.

The bases are 1" rounds, and thick enough to pick up nicely!
