CARTHAGE, 146 BC. Despite Rome's overwhelming superiority, the Roman Senate is shocked and embarrassed by Carthaginian successes early in the so called "Third Punic War." The adopted grandson of Scipio Africanus--the legendary general who defeated Hannibal 50 years before--is sent to Africa to take over the Roman invasion and finish the war properly. Young Scipio Aemilianus refocuses Rome's efforts and directs 80,000 men to lay siege to Carthage herself, the most heavily fortified city in the ancient world. After a grueling, two year effort, the Romans attempt to storm the walls near the war harbor. Can the fatalistically determined Punic garrison repel yet another direct attack?
